Listen: “The Saddest Thing”
It’s the saddest thing I ever seen
This couple and their wedding rings
A pawnshop floor’s a nasty thing
For tears to have to find a place to fall
He looks at her, she stares at him
The man behind the counter grins
He takes their rings and pockets them
He gives his dirty thumb a lick
And counts them out a little stack of shame
And its sad, oh it’s the saddest thing
It’s the saddest thing you ever seen
Oh it’s the saddest thing
And I’m afraid you really ain’t seen nothing yet
She’s feeling faint, he takes her hand
She stumbles to the counter, man
A pawnshop floor’s no place to land
When your heart has just been torn in two
Now she’s crawling ‘round all in her tears
The man behind the counter swears
Says, “get that woman outta here
It’s a public place and I don’t care
Where you’re gonna go
but sorry folks…you can’t stay here.”
And its sad, oh it’s the saddest thing
It’s the saddest thing you ever seen
Oh it’s the saddest thing
And I’m afraid we really ain’t seen nothing yet
It’s the saddest thing you ever seen
This couple with their wedding rings
A pawnshop floor’s such a nasty thing
For tears to have to find a place to fall
