Holy Moses, Holy Jesus (Holy Underwear) (click for lyrics)
(A slightly cynical look-back at growing-up in the Episcopal Church.)
Well I remember Sunday morning when I's ten years young
Mama'd drive to Sunday service in our station wagon
I had my hair all stiff and parted and my face scrubbed like a pot
And my shoes all black and shiny and my neck tied in a knot
I had a quarter in my pocket to pitch into the plate
As we drove past the shacks on Shiloh Street and looked the other way.
Holy Moses, Holy Jesus, Holy Underwear
Oh, Holy Smokes, Holy Ghost, I'm missing something here
Oh my goodness, oh my gracious, mercy sakes alive
I've heard a thousand benedictions and there's something here don't jibe.
My Sunday school teacher, her name was Mrs. Blair
She had these fish net stockings, Asian hat pins in her hair
She had these big full lips, color of sacrificial wine
She had these tight fitting dresses stretched across her behind
Made us memorize the Beatitudes and the Nicene Creed
And peace and love and all that stuff was kinda easy to believe
REPEAT CHORUS
Well Father Harry Douglas had a gin blossom nose
A deep smoky voice and a long purple robe
He had these acolytes light candles, old woman count the cash
And judging by the way things looked we'd built up quite a stash
We had carpets rolled out down the aisles and pads on every pew
We stood and kneeled and prayed and sang and did it all on que
Holy Moses, Holy Jesus, Holy Underwear
Oh, Holy Smokes, Holy Ghost, I'm missing something here
Oh my goodness, oh my gracious, mercy sakes alive
I've heard a thousand benedictions and there's something here don't jibe.
Holy Moses, Holy Jesus, Holy Underwear
Oh, Holy Smokes, Holy Ghost, I'm missing something here
Oh my goodness, oh my gracious, mercy sakes alive
I've heard a thousand benedictions and there's something here don't
There's something here don't, something here don't jibe.
